My Work Journey (So Far)
My work experience is kind of all over the place, but I love that for me. I’ve flipped chicken sandwiches, assembled life-saving medical devices, and babysat fruit flies. Each job has taught me skills that last a lifetime.
I started at Chick-fil-A, where the “my pleasure”s were plentiful. I got promoted to Team Lead because apparently I'm good at staying calm when someone gets rear ended in the drive through (true story). Closing a high volume restaurant also taught me that the details matter, whether mopping the floors or cleaning the ice cream machine (which I could do in record time).
These days, I spend my time at the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center, where I'm basically a fruit fly landlord, transferring thousands of Drosophila melanogaster to fresh food vials every other week and screening for mite infestations under a microscope. It's weirdly meditative work that requires serious attention to detail. One mislabeled vial could mess up someone's entire genetics research project, so precision is everything. Oh, and we’ve been featured in The New York Times. Twice.
While all of this might not scream “advertising portfolio,” here’s the thing: I’ve learned to work fast in stressful situations, lead teams, and work with precision. Plus, if I can make fruit fly maintenance sound interesting, imagine what I can do with your brand.
